With the COVID-19 crisis, it is not always clear under what conditions the French can travel in Europe and the rest of the world. The situation is changing week by week, and before planning a trip, it is advisable to be regularly informed about the conditions of entry into the territory of each country. Le Petit Futé draws up an inventory of the situation for you

Under what conditions can French people travel in Europe?

In France, the virus began to circulate actively in the territory again during the summer, leading some European countries to take measures regarding the reception of French tourists. Indeed, while the French have been able to travel to all Schengen countries since 15 June, each country retains its own policy and may have to take decisions when necessary. Since 15 August, England has made it known that it is reimposing a fourteen-day travel ban on travellers from France, as well as from the Netherlands. The Baltic countries, as well as Norway, Russia, Ukraine and Ireland also impose self-confinement on travellers from France, and some of them have simply closed their borders (e.g. Finland). Two countries finally allow French people to enter their territory, but with screening conditions, namely Iceland and Cyprus.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that a large number of European countries remain open to French tourists without any entry conditions, such as Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and most Eastern European countries. Depending on the country, temperature readings may be taken on entry into the country and forms indicating the place of stay and state of health may have to be filled in

What are the safest countries to travel in at the moment?

Johann Jones, a security expert with tour operator Tourlane and former NATO Deputy Director, has compiled a list of the safest countries in the world in terms of exposure to the virus, based on very specific criteria such as the number of new cases of VIDOC-19 over the last 14 days according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the score of the International Health Regulations (IHR), the number of inhabitants per country, the number of flights with or without stopovers or the hours of sunshine on a daily basis for outdoor activities.

These destinations include: Thailand, China, Jordan, Canada, Uruguay, Italy, Kenya, Uganda, Cambodia, Japan, Seychelles, Greece, Vietnam, Zambia, Botswana, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Rwanda and Ireland

It is important to check the conditions of entry into these territories for French travellers, but this regularly updated list has enough to give some travel ideas to all those who wish to explore the world in the near future
