Stay : Rioja Express

La Rioja is a very well-known region for its excellent wine production. But its territory, with rather limited dimensions, also houses some architectural marvels on the road to Santiago de Compostela. A weekend in the region will allow you to appreciate these two most emblematic facets.

Day 1: Architectural heritage

Steps: Nájera, San Millán De La Cogolla, Santo Domingo De La Calzada

Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Nájera and San Millán de la Cogolla: separated respectively by 20 km, these three stops offer an excellent overview of the architectural and religious heritage of La Rioja. Santo Domingo de la Calzada, an important stop on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, is worth a visit for its sumptuous cathedral, where Gothic, Baroque and Plateresque styles are combined. In Nájera, another stop on the pilgrimage, you will visit the monastery of Santa María la Real, which houses the pantheon of the ancient kingdom of Navarre. Finally, in San Millán de la Cogolla, you will discover the monasteries of Yuso and Suso, listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Day 2: Haro and the wine villages

Steps: Logroño, Briones, Haro, San Vicente De La Sonsierra

You can start the day in Haro, to visit its interesting Rioja Wine Museum. Within a radius of about 30 kilometers, several villages with a winemaking tradition are worth a visit, including Cenicero, where the emblematic Marqués de Cáceres winery is located; Briones, where you can visit the Dinastía Vivanco winery museum; and the bucolic village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, perched on a hill on the banks of the Ebro.
