  • Nampula
  • Pemba

Day 1: Arrival in Nampula, direction Mozambique Island

Steps: Maputo, Nampula

Domestic flights operate between Maputo-Nampula. Then allow two hours by car to reach Lumbo, the terminus of the journey, the starting point for the island connected to the mainland by a bridge that vehicles can use. From Nampula, chapas (collective minibuses) make the connection several times a day.

Day 2: Back in the past with a visit to the old town

The island of Mozambique is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At crossroads, it has been nourished by African, European and Arab cultures. Churches, mosques, colonial houses, Portuguese forts...: the decor sets the tone, soak up the atmosphere. Photo lovers will enjoy themselves. Don't miss a meal at O Escondidinho or O Paladar, you'll come back to it!

Day 3: Taking the sea

If the island of Mozambique is not very suitable for bathing, you can take a boat tour and discover its small satellite sisters (Goa, Sena, Sete Paus). A dhow cruise (traditional sailboat) at sunset is also an unforgettable option. For this you can go to "Yo" of the small Aqua agency, which will organise a tour with a perfectly equipped boat.

Day 4: Departure for Nampula and Lichinga

Steps: Cuamba, Lichinga, Nampula

It takes a little more than two hours to travel from the island of Mozambique to Nampula airport. From there, you can either take an internal flight to Lichinga or, if you have time, take the train to Cuamba and then a chapa (local minibus) to Lichinga. The train journey between Nampula and Cuamba is reliable and as fast as the road. For the atmosphere and the beauty of the landscapes, it is a unique experience. The train leaves at 6am sharp and arrives around 2pm on the same day.... Chapas leave just after the train arrives for Lichinga. Night in Lichinga.

Day 5: Discovering Lake Malawi

Steps: Lichinga, Metangula

Metangula, the first city to arrive on the shores of Lake Niassa, is about two hours' drive from Lichinga. The journey is sublime. Don't miss a night or two in the village of Chwanga, in the centro Touristico Cetuka, 5 km from Metangula. Our cheap favorite. Sensation of the end of the world guaranteed.

Day 6: Strolls around the lake and lake activities

A kayak trip, a visit to the surrounding islands and lake villages, bird watching... will enchant your day. Here we cut ourselves off from the world and reconnect with ourselves.

Day 7: Return to Nampula

Steps: Nampula, Pemba

From Nampula you can continue to Pemba in the north, a small coastal town, for a seaside extension.
