Day 1: Discovering Stockholm

Steps: Stockholm, Västervik

Norrmalm and Djugården. The discovery begins on the great square Sergelstorg, which became the heart of the modern city. Enter the large house of culture, fully glazed, and within which a huge model of the city lets you find and have an idea of the world around you. By leaving, take the right in Hamngatan Avenue and get off towards Kunsträgården, a large garden where fountains, trees and benches invite you to a short break, the time to admire the beautiful red church of Saint-Adolf and the back of the opera. Get down to the dock. From there you are facing the royal castle. On your left are the Strömkajen wharf, the Grand Hotel and the imposing National Museum of Fine Arts. On the right, it is Parliament that is accessed by the oldest bridge in Stockholm, Norrbron and its stone vaults. Go back to the wharf by the right and you will soon join a monumental place on which the statue of King Gustave II Adolf is guarded. It is the heart of power: here are the Ministry of Defense and Foreign Affairs. You will find an elegant cream house in front of the water. This is the home of the Prime Minister. You are now in front of a bridge (Riksbron) which leads to an impressive arch. This is the way to the old town, Gamla Stan. But this part of the visit is for later. Get involved in the Queen's pedestrian street, Drottninggatan, named by Queen Kristina in the seventeenth century. This interminable walkway leads to the Center's park, two kilometers further. You can stroll through and keep pace with pedestrians. You will go back to the House of Culture: Continue on Drottninggatan. After a few hundred meters turn right to the Hötorget square where the large concert house rises. This is where, every December 10, the prestigious Nobel Prizes are handed over. The place is animated every day by a market and, if you want to restore, underground halles (entrance to the right of cinema SF) offer a wide choice, at affordable prices. It's also, in winter, a way to warm up!

The second part of this day is to make you discover the Vasa Museum and, if you have time and weather, the great outdoor museum Skansen. Both are located on the island of Djugården, which can be accessed either by bus (Sergelstorg, bus 47 or 69), or by foot, descending Hamngatan to Norrmalmstorg, then along the beautiful Strandvägen Avenue and its buildings in the late nineteenth century. The island is on your right, green, recognizable to the arrows and turrets of the great Nordic Museum. The visit of the Vasa Museum lasts between an hour and a half and two hours, but it takes three good hours to enjoy Skansen. The Nordic Museum is a pleasant alternative if it rains or is too cold to go to Skansen.

Day 2: Visit to the northern part of the city

Steps: Stockholm, Malmö

Gamla Stan and Södermalm. You are familiar with the north of the city, with its often unaesthetic architecture. The rest of the visit will prove that Stockholm is not just uncharted buildings and pedestrian streets full of fashion signs. Start on Riksbron, the bridge that leads to Parliament. You pass the vaults to find yourself at the foot of the royal Baroque castle. Along the left, you can access the Tre Kronor Museum which has been telling the story of the castle for 800 years. Alternatively, hire yourself in Västerlånggatan, narrow and paved street, one of the oldest in Stockholm. Admire ancient houses with pastel crepi and enjoy dozens of souvenir shops and crafts. To the left, you access the cathedral and the entrance to the castle, which you can visit. At the top of the island, the large place (Stortorget) is probably the most beautiful place in the city. In summer, the terraces and fountain inspire the softness of life and tranquility. In December, the Christmas market and the lights create a completely different atmosphere, no less picturesque. Here is the stock exchange, which now houses the Nobel Museum. Then just get lost in the little streets and secret squares, wander away from the hustle and bustle of the city center trying to imagine how life was here, eight centuries earlier, when Gamla Stan was on-busy, dirty and stinky, victim of fires and redemptions of criminals of all kinds... Come down south of the island and the small square Järntorget, junction point between the two Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan arteries. Here it is recommended to pause before heading towards Slussplan and cross Slussen to discover Södermalm.

Slussen, the communication node built in 1935, narrow and complex, as far as possible, will soon be destroyed to be completely transformed in the coming years. In the old town hall is the city museum, with free access. No reason to deprive himself of it. Then you have to go back to Götgatan, the "rue de la thirif" which passes through all Södermalm and whose northern part is black evenings on weekends. Semi-pedestrian and occupied by dozens of cafés and pubs, this is one of Stockholm's most popular arteries. Soon she passes through Medborgarplatsen, says "Médis", a place that never stops living. Södermalm doesn't have many museums but it's good for walks. By heading east, you will find the charming Mariatorget, its fountain and its small lawns, flanked by the busy Hornsgatan. Cross it and climb the steps to reach the heights east of Södermalm. Several streets are paved and very peaceful, guardians of the memory of an original poor and laborer neighborhood, now very popular. The Monteliusvägen road dominates the heights and the northern part of the city. It is in the corner that some of Stieg Larsson's best-seller, Millenium, takes place. Bellmansgatan is on the way down to Slussen.

Day 3: The Possibility of Islands Surrounding Stockholm

Steps: Luleå, Västervik, Stockholm, Drottningholm

Långholmen or Drottningholm. To conclude this stay, here are two proposals to discover two very different aspects of Stockholm. The first is a relaxing and relaxing day (if the sun is shining, preferably) in one of the places most popular by the Stockholmois, the small island of Långholmen, formerly prison and become the paradise of bathers. To access it, just take the metro to Hornstull (green line) and then head to Västbron. Do not commit to the bridge but go down to the left to reach the small bridge that leads to Långholmen. From there follow the path along the water and pleasure boats. There are hundreds of secret bathing places, a beach (often crowded), rocks to dive... Further towards the north-west of the island, it is possible to swim with the view of Kungsholmen and the old town in clean water. With a beautiful summer day, this program is real happiness!

The other solution is the visit of the royal site of Drottningholm, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Several boats leave Stadshuskajen every day (the wharf just opposite the city hall). The crossing to the island of Lovön takes about an hour. Here you will discover the baroque castle which is reflected on Lake Mälaren, its stunning interior which combines baroque, rococo and romantic rooms, the baroque theater preserved since the seventeenth century, the unique Chinese pavilion and the beautiful French and English gardens surrounding these buildings. A visit to familiarize yourself with the Swedish royalty (this castle is now the winter residence of the king and his family), while enjoying a magnificent site that travels with pleasure. A combined ticket costs 290 sek and includes the round trip and all three visits.
