Stay : Discovering Soviet Moscow

Founded in 1922, the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) was the largest state in the world. Nicolas II, the last Czar of Russia, was depressed by the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin during the October coup. Pierre the Great made St. Petersburg the capital of the Empire in 1712. But with the end of the royal empire, Moscow becomes the capital again. Redive into this so special, yet very cool, part of Russian history.

Detail of the stay : Discovering Soviet Moscow - 3 days

  • MAUSOLÉE DE LÉNINE
  • VDNKH
  • UNIVERSITÉ D'ÉTAT DE MOSCOU (МГУ)

Day 1: The heart of the regime: Red Square

Steps: Moscou

Visit Lenin's mausoleum for the cult of the first Soviet leader, return to Goum and his food store Gastronom N 1. The day can continue on the square of Loubianka where the former KGB building stands, which today houses the successor of Soviet homeland security, the FSB. Take a break at Glavpivtorg, a reconstructed canteen to the "Soviet". A stone's throw from the Mayakovsky Museum is the art scene of the poet's life. Visit the Underground Command Post in Taganka (on reservation only). The day can end at the restaurant Mari Vanna with its perfect restoration of a Soviet apartment or at Petrovich for its decadent atmosphere of the 1980 s.

Day 2: At the foot of the seven Stalinist sisters

Steps: Moscou

Balade on the path of the seven Stalinist sisters, becoming symbols of Moscow as strong as the Kremlin. They were built after the Second World War during the most pristine period of the Stalinist regime. They are the embodiment of its disproportionate ambition. The ideal would be to sleep at Leningradskaya (now Hilton) or the Ukraïna (now Radison SAS), the only giant ones that can be visited. The other five house apartments, the State University, the ministries of agriculture and foreign affairs. You can also book a room at the Sovetsky Hotel where Stalin's suite, red carpets and portraits of the party's senior executives are always intact.

Day 3: Communism from Communism

Steps: Moscou

Vdnkh, the exhibition of achievements of the USSR's popular economy, was a propaganda place for the success of the national economy. Its wonderful neo-antique pavilions and fountains to socialist nymphs make it a monumental open-air museum of the "flamboyant Stalinism" architecture. Ironically, vdnh has become a big shopping mall, but this territory will soon be rehabilitated with new exhibition halls.
