In the late afternoon, take the cable car to Sugarloaf for an unforgettable sunset. Some tourist agencies offer these day tours in a van with a guide.

Day 2: Rio, the favelas and the center

Steps: Rio De Janeiro, Petrópolis

A morning visit to a favela with a social association: a glimpse into Rio's other reality. In the heart of these "outlaw" working-class neighborhoods, Brazilians organize themselves and live in dignity and solidarity. Afternoon visit to downtown Rio: Imperial Palace, National Museum of Fine Arts, Church of Our Lady of Candelária.

Day 3: Paraty

Steps: Paraty

A detour to Paraty, a superb colonial town 3 hours' drive from Rio on the Costa Verde, is recommended. Visit the town, its small stores and good restaurants.

Day 6: Iguaçu Falls on the Argentine side

Steps: Parque Nacional Iguazú

Head for Argentina for a day's walk close to the falls. The Argentine side offers the most spectacular view of the falls. Various adventure tours are offered by the Macuco Tour agency, for example, where you approach the falls by boat, but is this really necessary? Return to Foz in the late afternoon.

Day 7: Heading for Manaus

Steps: Manaus

Flight Iguaçu - Manaus. Afternoon city tour. Visit to theOpera House. Then visit the floating port designed by English engineers in the early 20th century, a technological feat for its time. An obligatory stop at the market, where you can return early in the morning to watch the ballet of dockers unloading fruit, vegetables and fish of impressive size.

Day 8: Meeting the waters

Steps: Manaus

A day between the dark waters of the Rio Negro and the yellowish, earth-toned Solimões (whose union gives rise to the Amazon). We plunge into a labyrinth of water and vegetation. Arrival at the Lodge. In the afternoon, excursion by pirogue along the igarapés (canals flooded during the rainy season) to meet a family of Caboclos (for example).

Day 9: Amazon rainforest

A day dedicated to discovering the "green hell", its flora, fauna and indigenous peoples. Night at the Lodge. The agency will tell you if you need anti-malarial treatment. Not all areas of the Amazon are malaria-free. Guides are trained, accredited and experienced.

Day 10: Last day at the Jungle Lodge

At dawn, you can watch the ballet of birds leaving their nocturnal refuge. A guaranteed spectacle of sound and color. Then, a final stroll around the lodge. After lunch, return to Manaus, followed by a domestic flight from Manaus to Salvador. Arrival at Salvador airport and transfer to hotel.

Day 11: A stroll through Salvador

Steps: Mariana, Salvador

City tour. The city of Salvador is an open-air museum. The historic Pelourinho district has been revitalized since its classification by UNESCO in 1985. The Baroque churches, including the marvellous São Francisco Church, are overloaded with gilding. The upper town is one of the best-preserved ensembles in Latin America.
