Day 1: Munich

Steps: Munich

In-depth tour of Munich's Old Town. Pass Marienplatz,Odeonsplatz, Maximilianstraße, etc. Stroll along the Isar. Snack at the Viktualienmarkt. Walk through the Englischer Garten and the Eisbachwelle to meet Munich's surfers. Evening in a downtown tavern.

Day 2: Munich

Steps: Munich

Visit one or two of Munich's must-see museums. For art lovers: one of the pinacotheques or the Lenbachhaus. For history buffs: the Residenz or the NS-Dokumentationszentrum, for example. Take a stroll through the Maxvorstadt and enjoy a lively evening in one of the bars on Türkenstraße.

Day 3: Passau

Steps: Passau

Stopover in Passau, an authentic town nestled in a remarkable natural setting: on a peninsula at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers. Take a guided tour of the town, and stroll along the winding roads. Stop off at the gigantic Dom St. Stephan to admire one of the world's largest organs.

Day 4: Regensburg

Steps: Ratisbonne, Bamberg

Regensburg is well worth a two-day visit to get the feel of this colorful city with its student, almost Italian atmosphere. The cathedral(Dom Sankt-Peter) plunges us back into the medieval history of this prestigious free city of the Empire. A visit to the Altes Rathaus reveals its role as the seat of the Perpetual Diet of the Holy Roman Empire.

Day 5: Regensburg

Steps: Ratisbonne

The Danube will be the main theme of this second day in Regensburg. For history buffs, a visit to the Walhalla is a must. This neoclassical pantheon provides an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the great names of German history. To learn all about Bavarian history, don't miss a visit to the beautiful Haus der bayrischen Geschichte museum.

Day 6: Nuremberg

Steps: Nuremberg

Stroll through Nuremberg's maze of medieval streets. Tour of the city walls. Visit the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, the Memorium (site of the Nuremberg trials) or the Dokumentationszentrum to learn more about the city's history. The city center is also full of cafés, restaurants and bars where you can spend a festive evening.

Day 7: Bayreuth

Steps: Bayreuth

Morning: tour of downtown Bayreuth and the splendid Margraves' Opera House (Markgräfliches Opernhaus). Afternoon: visit your choice of Wagner's theater(Bayreuther Festspielhaus) or Villa Wahnfried. For castle lovers: excursion to theEremitage. Late afternoon: visit the historic Maisel's brewery and sample one of their beers at Liebesbier.

Day 8: Bamberg

Steps: Bamberg

Bamberg is a superb Episcopal city, which has survived intact and has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1993. Take a stroll through the winding alleys of the town center, along the river, to appreciate the beautiful panorama of Klein Venedig (Little Venice). Visit the upper town with the Neue Residenz, and the cathedral (Bamberger Dom St. Peter & St. Georg) to enjoy the view.

Day 9: Bad Kissingen

Steps: Bad Kissingen

What better way to take a break during your long stay in Bavaria than in a small spa town? Bad Kissingen has retained the charm of the spa towns of the Belle Époque. Guided tour of the town center to discover the spa facilities. Afternoon at the KissSalis Therme to unwind and recharge your batteries.

Day 10: Würzburg

Steps: Munich

Würzburg is the first stop on the Romantic Road, with its beautiful natural setting and hillside vineyards on either side of the Main. Visit the pompous Residenz of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg and take a walk on the Marienberg to admire the view. In the evening, wine tasting on the Old Stone Bridge and/or a pub crawl with students on Sanderstraße.

Day 11: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Steps: Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of Bavaria's most popular tourist destinations, and with good reason: it boasts an unspoilt medieval old town, intact town walls and several interesting museums, including the Craftsmen's House, the Torture Museum and the Medieval Justice Museum. One of the highlights of the Romantic Road.

Day 12: Augsburg

Steps: Augsburg

Despite the bombardments that destroyed part of the city center during the war, Augsburg still bears witness to its brilliant past as a Free City of the Empire, of which the Town Hall (Rathaus Ausgburg) is the most striking symbol. Augsburg Cathedral(Hoher Dom), the Schaezlerpalais and the Fuggerei are not to be missed.

Day 13: Lindau

Steps: Lindau

Ideally situated on an island, Lindau is a picturesque place to discover the charms of Lake Constance. We'll take a tour of the old town, passing by the superb Altes Rathaus, before settling down on a terrace in the little harbor, to enjoy a coffee or cocktail while savoring the view of the lake and the mountain panorama on the Swiss side.

Day 14: Füssen

Steps: Füssen

The adventure continues in Füssen, a small town that has retained its medieval character. After wandering through the narrow streets of the old town, you can climb up to the Hohes Schloss to discover its astonishing trompe-l'oeil facades. Visit the Benedictine Abbey of St. Magnus (Kloster Sankt-Mang) and stroll along the River Lech. Evening in a terrace restaurant.

Day 15: The castles of Ludwig II of Bavaria

Steps: Schwangau

For the more adventurous, the tour ends with a visit to the castles of Ludwig II of Bavaria, via Schwangau. Attractions include Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles , the Museum of the Kings of Bavaria, St. Coloman's Church and much more. For a fantastic hike and panoramic view, take the cable car (Tegelbergbahn).

Day 16: Munich

Steps: Munich

Back to Munich for a relaxing day. Brunch on the terrace in the Haidhausen district. Afternoon relaxation in the magnificent Jugendstil setting of the Müller'sches Volksbad to recover from this long stay, with your feet in the water and your eyes on the ceiling. Evening at a Glockenbachviertel restaurant and bar.
