Day 1: A day at Chantilly

Steps: Chantilly

Start in the town that will serve as your home base, the renowned Chantilly (yes, like the cream). Start off with a tour of the city and its green spaces to the Château de Chantilly. With your 1-day ticket, start the visit with its Grandes Écuries (where their equestrian show is held daily by reservation) and the horse museum, then continue through its lush gardens. Take a break for lunch, before finally entering this splendid castle with its exceptional painting galleries. Since the Middle Ages and over the centuries, it has been the home of many princely families who have left their mark on this jewel of French heritage. Don't miss the Cabinet des Livres, which has the most beautiful collection of manuscripts after the National Library of France. In the evening, stop by one of the city's restaurants, such as the Vertugadin, where you can discover real whipped cream (far from the industrial version we know).

Day 2: A day at Compiègne and Pierrefonds

Steps: Compiègne, Pierrefonds

Direction Compiègne, the "Imperial City", and its splendid castle gathering a unique collection of furniture from the First and Second Empire. For the amateurs, this one also welcomes the National Car Museum, in order to better understand the history and the evolution of transport, with a very beautiful collection of vehicles of all horizons. Take the car and have a lunch break in the forest of Compiègne, the third largest state forest in France. If you come in September, it is also a great place to listen to the famous stag bellow. Before coming back to Chantilly, make a stop at the Pierrefonds castle built by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. Worthy of the most beautiful fairy tale castles, this medieval castle surprises by its grandeur.

Day 3: A day at Montépilloy and Ermenonville

Steps: Ermenonville, Montépilloy

A smaller loop awaits you after the busy day of the day before. First stop is at the Château de Montépilloy, about 20 minutes away by car. If you like ruined castles, you will appreciate this one, with a partially preserved keep. Think about opting for a guided tour to be able to truly imagine its past splendor. Next, go to the castle ofErmenonville where part of the filming of the movie " Les Visiteurs"

took place in 1993. Its Jean-Jacques Rousseaux park was designed according to the ideas of the philosopher, who died in Ermenonville in 1778 while staying in the castle for over a month. He was buried on the island of Peupliers at the time. Although his body was transferred to the crypt of the Pantheon in 1794, a monument paying tribute to him remains. Want to extend your stay? There are many other castles to see in the region such as the castle of Valgenceuse or the one in Montataire.
