Stay : Stay in the South Vendée, between forest and marshland Poitevin

Between the forests, the vineyards and the emblematic Green Venice, the South Vendée is a territory where nature is king. But this part of the department is also marked by art and history, like Fontenay-le-Comte. Not to mention the abbeys, or the mining history, more confidential but also important to understand the Vendée.

Day 1: Fontenay-le-Comte

Steps: Fontenay-Le-Comte, Pissotte, Vix

A stopover in Fontenay-le-Comte, city of art and history, during your stay in the South Vendée, is a must. The city, which is also part of the association of the Most Beautiful Detours of France, is indeed endowed with a historical and architectural heritage to discover, with its numerous religious buildings, houses and hotels. Your day will continue with an original and bucolic bike ride in the Poitevin marshes, before ending with a wine tasting in the vineyards of Pissotte or Vix.

Day 2: The abbeys of the South Vendée

Steps: Maillezais

In Nieul-sur-l'Autise, the royal abbey of Saint-Vincent dates back to the 11th century and has a remarkable architecture in the Poitevin Romanesque style. A few kilometres to the south of the commune, the abbey of Maillezais awaits you, with an abbey church transformed into a cathedral in the 15th century. While you are in Maillezais, take a boat trip in the Poitevin marshes!

Day 3: The Vendée and its mining history

Steps: Faymoreau

Although the Vendée is not spontaneously associated with its mining history, this part of the Vendée's history is nonetheless an integral part of the department's identity. Start with a visit to the Faymoreau Mining Centre, to be immersed in this period. You can then go and visit the "corons" present in the commune. Take the opportunity to admire the stained glass windows of the Faymoreau chapel, created by an Italian artist.

Day 4: Mareuil-sur-Lay, the vineyard and the cathedral of Luçon

Steps: Luçon

For this last day of your stay in the South Vendée, gastronomy is on the agenda with, to start the day, a visit to the vineyard of Mareuil-sur-Lay. The Maison Mourat organizes bike rides in the vineyards. Try it out! It's original and it's another way to discover the region. Of course, don't forget to take a few bottles home with you. Afterwards, treat yourself by going to the bakery La Maligorne to buy a gâche. You will taste the best gâchette of Vendée! Finally, a visit to Luçon is a must, especially its cathedral, with a stop at the Jardin Dumaine for a well-deserved break.
