The Périgord remains one of the favourite destinations of the French who find in this region a diversity of landscapes, a well-preserved authenticity and an art of living. Tourism and gastronomy are the keywords of this Dordogne which has the largest number of heritage resources in France, well preserved and of all ages. On this gourmet land, Sarlat-la-Canéda honours truffles every year in January for a weekend (19 and 20 January this year). An opportunity to set foot under the table in this unique region.
Its past goes back to Prehistory as evidenced by the caves and troglodytic sites. If the cave of Lascaux has not been visited for a very long time, Lascaux IV is an integral replica of the original cave. Lovers of old stones and cultural tourism will find the Gallo-Roman remains discovered in Périgueux and Montcaret, the thousand and one castles, abbeys, Romanesque churches, bastides or the magnificent ten most beautiful villages in France that the department counts on a total of thirty-one in New Aquitaine exciting. They will take the time to visit gardens, museums, craftspeople, theme parks and attend a multitude of festivals, festivals, cultural and culinary events.
In addition, taking the many hiking trails, including two GR 36 and 64, on foot, by bike or on horseback in a sometimes wild nature, canoeing, kayaking or barging down rivers and streams are unique experiences to share with the whole family and will delight strollers, the curious or sports enthusiasts.
A country with four colours
Périgord has another particularity: it has four colours. A kind of mosaic of individualized countries with very specific characteristics. Each colour defines specific terroirs. Green, red, black, white... Green like the many rivers of the Limousin region, red like the Bergerac wine, black like the forests of Sarladais, white like the limestone of the Isle valley.
For several centuries, people have cherished this multiple, living and amazing land and have made the most of it. From this terroir have come trades, perpetuated from generation to generation, and exceptional products that contribute to a generous gastronomy: Bergerac wines, foie gras, truffles, caviar, strawberries, nuts. Producers, canners, table d'hôtes, farmhouses, restaurants are the ambassadors of a gastronomic wealth known and recognized worldwide. Périgord necessarily rhymes with good food and simple happiness. Although Périgord cuisine was partly invented by the peasants, it was also forged in the castles where there was a bombardment between the game killed during the hunt, the fish that filled the rivers and the wines that the Romans had brought with them. Another phenomenon that has appeared for many years and is constantly developing is the Auberge Farm. Farmers have seen a way to make ends meet by creating these table d'hôtes where 70% of the products served must come from the farm. The prices charged are often lower than those of restaurateurs and the quantities are sometimes gargantuan...
This diversity is accompanied by a large number of accommodations for all budgets and all criteria of choice: hotels, guest rooms, classic or unusual cottages, holiday villages, holiday homes, etc.
Sarlat-la-Canéda, the superb capital of the Périgord Noir
The Périgord Noir is by far the most popular region in the department due to the many world-famous prehistoric sites such as Les Eyzies, capital of prehistory. One of the most beautiful approaches passes through the Dordogne River. At the bend of each loop, almost all the castles that make Périgord famous - Montfort, Beynac, Fayrac, Castelnaud, Les Milandes, Marqueyssac - and superb sites such as La Roque-Gageac or the bastide de Domme emerge as sentinels. The Black Périgord has its capital, Sarlat. Sarlat-la-Canéda is an essential stopover during a Périgord visit. Located in the hollow of hills called " pechs ", this city of art and history was founded in the 9th century and was built around a Benedictine abbey. Very quickly, the city became richer under the direct authority of the Holy See of Rome. The Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) and the plague had serious economic and demographic consequences. It was during the reconstruction in the 15th and 16th centuries that the city was adorned with superb private mansions. Today, Sarlat-la-Canéda is the leading city in Europe in terms of the number of listed buildings au m² with 253 buildings, 18 listed monuments and 59 listed monuments on 11 ha. It is a real jewel, a witness of medieval and Renaissance times, whose points of interest are not lacking. Sarlat-la-Canéda really recovers its breath and its splendour out of season, revealing more modestly its narrow streets, its inner courtyards, its private mansions assimilating all periods (medieval foundations, Renaissance floors, classical roofs)
La truffle in celebration
A pleasant moment to discover this architectural gem is the truffle festival, held every year in January. This celebration, initiated with the Culinary Academy of Foie Gras and Truffles, gives rise to a large market featuring fresh truffles and truffle products, as well as many activities: workshops to discover all the subtleties of truffles, tastings, cavage demonstrations by dogs trained on a truffle truck installed in front of the cathedral, initiation to oenology, presentation of the Trophée Jean Rougié which welcomes young talents in French cuisine. It is placed under the control of a prestigious jury composed in its entirety of Meilleur Ouvrier de France... In a friendly atmosphere, a dozen Sarladais and starred chefs play the game in a kitchen specially equipped for the occasion in the room of the Ancien Évêché. A unique moment. Notice to gourmands!
