Tarn-et-Garonne: the name is explicit. This green and blue department ofOccitania is bathed by the Tarn and the Garonne. Spread out around Montauban, it reveals its ripening valleys where charming rivers flow and where one discovers a string of towns and villages with a very rich heritage. From the wild beauty of the causse and the opulence of the plains of the Garonne and the Tarn, to the gorges of the Aveyron, beautiful landscapes and soothing natural environments await you. Crisscross the country on foot, by bike, on horseback, on motorcycle, but also on water. This department invites you to practice nautical cruises and river tourism on a waterway. The Canal des Deux Mers, which links Toulouse to Bordeaux, and the greenway which runs alongside it, are dotted with picturesque sites and constitute one of the major attractions for tourism in Tarn-et-Garonne. It is a pleasure to discover this territory along the water. The Tarn and Aveyron rivers are ideal for canoeing and kayaking. There are many hiking trails, including a portion of the route to Santiago de Compostela (GR65).
The built heritage is the other richness of this region with Moissac, masterpiece of Romanesque art, Montauban, city of Ingres, but also three of the most beautiful villages of France and ten villages of character. And since we are in the South-West, the pleasure of the table is there.
When to go to Tarn-et-Garonne ? Between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, Toulouse and Bordeaux, Tarn-et-Garonne oscillates between the mountainous influences of the Massif Central and the mildness of Gascony. The autumn period in Tarn-et-Garonne is like an Indian summer, with temperatures that are still very pleasant, accompanied by the blaze of the countryside. It is a good season to stay in Tarn-et-Garonne except for a few storms. Cold winters are rare in this department; generally they are mild and wet. There is no ice but sometimes fog. Spring is a very pleasant season with sunshine and average temperatures in the morning around 10°C and in the afternoon around 20°C. Rainfall is mainly brought by westerly winds and peaks in May. Summer is hot, even very hot, but there are many rivers and water holes to cool off. This is the high tourist season. For hiking, it is better to wait until the end of the summer and lower temperatures. Here, there is no relief where you can find coolness as in other departments of Occitania.
At the crossroads of the mountainous influences of the Massif Central and the mildness of Gascony, the Tarn-et-Garonne has a degraded oceanic climate: mild and humid winter, rare snowfalls, hot and generally dry summer. Rainfall is rare around Montauban, while the northeast is very wet in winter and spring, with a peak in May. Fog often falls in the valleys in late fall and winter.
