Here one swims, fishes and lets the time go by. The most visited site in the Haute-Saône is the Notre-Dame-du-Haut chapel (1955) signed by Le Corbusier, at the top of its hill in Ronchamp. Previously, the 18th and 19th centuries left a rich heritage of religious buildings, castles and houses. You can go down the valley of the Ognon by canoe or by boat, crossing many towns of character and visiting about twenty private castles, including the one ofOricourt, the best preserved 12th century castle in Franche-Comté. Among the thirteen towns and villages classified as "petites cités comtoises de caractère", let's mention Faverney, Scey-sur-Saône, Fondremand, Ray-sur-Saône, Bucey-lès-Gy and Faucogney-et-la-Mer. In this area, you have access to dozens of very varied museums on the theme of mining, costumes, miniature fairs, tools of the past, the old forge, cherries, etc

You must see Vesoul and the Saône Valley, taste the Franche-Comté wines in Champlitte, visit the upper town of Gray, a stopover for cyclists on the V50-Charles le Téméraire bicycle route, along the Petite Saône, which is popular with boaters. The Vosges du Sud region, for its part, a wilderness, will dazzle you with its plateau of the Thousand Ponds. Seen from the sky, it is a splendor of greenery and silver reflections. Further north, cyclists can test themselves on the steepness of the Planche des Belles Filles. You can take the waters in Luxeuil-les-Bains, a beautiful spa town, and discover the distilleries of Fougerolles, which transforms cherries into kirsch or Griottines®.

What to visit Haute-Saône?

When to go to Haute-Saône?

The high tourist season in Haute-Saône is the summer with many activities and the possibility to practice all outdoor sports, especially water sports. But in spring and autumn, you can enjoy very pleasant off-seasons. Fishermen dip their rods at the end of March. Hikers enjoy the first beautiful days. Orchids bloom in the mountains of Gy. In autumn, it's the stag's bellow in the woods, beautiful colors in the forests and always a lot of pleasure to navigate on the Petite Saône. Some museums close in winter, but there are so many in Haute-Saône that you will always find one open during the low tourist season, as well as the castles.

Weather all year round

The Haute-Saône is subject to a double influence, oceanic (significant precipitation) and continental, with a significant annual thermal amplitude, a winter accompanied by snowfalls and heavy frosts, and a dry and hot summer. The proximity of the Vosges and Jura mountains also shapes the local weather patterns. The presence of a groundwater table in several areas attenuates the summer drought, while the ponds bring their freshness.
