In 2015, the Tamar Marine Turtle Preservation Project was 35 years old. Initially three centres, in Bahia, Sergipe and Espírito Santo, monitored five types of turtles threatened with extinction and accompanied the time when the animals came on the beach to lay their eggs. Today this work is carried out by 22 centres ranging from Ceará to Florianópolis, south of Brazil. Project HQ is located in Praia do Forte. On this beach there are a hundred staff members from the reception team, biologists, veterinarians, technicians and guides who are looking after the project.

The visit is very pleasant, especially with children, and you can see turtles swim in the pools.

Also known as FENACAB, the Fédération Nationale du Culte Afro-Brésilien (National Federation of Afro-Brazilian Worship) plays an important role in the preservation of candomblé worship in Bahia and the rest of Brazil. Its role is to register all terreiros (Afro-Brazilian places of worship) in Salvador, and in Brazil as a whole. The state of Bahia was the first to officially recognize Candomblé as a religion. Today, over 5,400 terreiros are listed.
