Climate Formentera

With its mild winter and hot summer temperatures, Formentera's climate is typically Mediterranean. In fact, it is very rare for the mercury to fall below 0°C on the island, which makes its climate particularly pleasant from January to December. The average temperature over the year is 18°C, and it generally varies between 10°C in winter and 25°C in summer. In summer and winter, however, the sun shines on the pearl of the Balearic Islands: there is an average of 300 days of sunshine per year. Spring is the most pleasant time of the year with ideal temperatures and fewer tourists. In winter, Formentera is deserted and many shops are closed, while in summer, the season is in full swing and the island is full of visitors. In July/August, it's hot, very hot. What could be better than to bask in the sun and enjoy the paradisiacal beaches? But you have to agree to share them!

Climate and seasonality

Mediterranean, temperate and warm, the climate of Formentera is particularly mild in winter. The average temperature does not fall below 12°C. However, the island is somewhat shunned by tourists. Once you arrive, you can see why: many shops and restaurants are closed! A tranquility appreciated by the inhabitants of the island. December, January and February are the quietest months. Lovers of quietness and long solitary walks on the beach, this is your season. If the weather may seem more unstable, the days are mostly sunny, clear and limpid. A little wool is sometimes enough to cover up in the afternoon, but in the evening, temperatures drop and the nights are cool. Winter is the most overcast and rainy season, although showers are rare. Between December and January, the water temperature varies between 14.6°C and 16.5°C.
In autumn and spring, the climate is very variable, but the temperatures are particularly pleasant, especially if you fear the heat of July and August. Spring sees the island's flora and fauna bloom and the light radiates from its lunar landscapes. Rains are sporadic, but can be heavy, and the powerful thunderstorms sometimes offer surprising natural spectacles. Rest assured, it is extremely rare that it rains all day. After the rain, the sun quickly appears, warming the earth and raising the mercury to 25°C. For several years now, the Balearic Islands and especially Formentera have been suffering from drought. Rainy days are becoming increasingly rare. It is also possible to swim from May, or even April for a cool swim, and until November, for those who are less chilly. In May, the water temperature varies between 16.6°C and 21.4°C. In April it is around 16.2°C and in November around 19.5°C.
The tourist season starts again in mid-May. During this period, the weather is warm and the sun is shining. The sky is blue and the water is cool (about 25°C), but the beaches are quieter. In the evening, the temperature gets cooler. You can wear a little wool. The east or rising wind can blow. If you wish to avoid the crowds of the high season, this is the ideal period. Hotel and rental rates are lower than in high summer. June is the beginning of the high tourist season with a peak in July and August. Some parts of the island are then crowded (Illetes comes to mind) which has forced the local authorities to put in place restrictive measures (access to some beaches by car or even by scooter becomes paying and it is very difficult to park). Of course, it is hotter, sometimes even too hot, up to 40°C. August is the month when the water temperature is the hottest: it averages 26.3°C.
