In the luxury hotel sector, on the coastal road, this small, chic and well-kept shopping mall has a handful of craft, clothing and jewellery shops, where quality takes precedence over quantity. For gold jewellery set with fine stones or more modern ornaments, go to Adamas, one of the most famous jewellers in the Indian Ocean for diamond cutting - prices are much lower than in Europe for equivalent quality.

When it comes to shopping, the East is a bit of a poor relation. Even Belle Mare, the most touristy village on the coast, only offers a pocket handkerchief centre with a few souvenir and clothing shops, and, worse still, a host of counterfeit products!
