Set up in the calm of the lagoon, the place is especially worth the detour for its traditional wooden dhows. Some sailors offer walks there, either off the coast of Sur or as far as Ras al-Hadd. A more common option is to go around the lagoon on a motorboat to see the boats, but also the hills with watchtowers. Negotiate the rate and length of the walk on site with the kids or fishermen who are available. Beware, the activity is subject to the vagaries of the tide!

The Sultanate goes electric with scooters. More and more inland cities (such as Nizwa) as well as seaside towns, these little machines can be hired to get around or even to visit - and Sur, with its long corniche and the touristy but quiet Al Hayja district, lends itself very well to this gentle mode of transport. Among the locals, it's mainly young people, and boys in particular, who rent out scooters - an atypical way of taking a photo!
