The island of Pemba celebrates an unexpected festival in January: the bullfighting festival, inherited from the Portuguese colonizers.
Pemba celebrates an unexpected festival: bullfighting. Like the Spaniards, the Portuguese practiced this tradition from the 16th to the 18th century and imported it here. Unlike their neighbors, they practised traditional bullfighting only between bulls, with no killing involved (except by accident). While this practice has been lost in Portugal, it has been perpetuated in Pemba for centuries. The bulls fight in a village festival, to the rhythm of Swahili drumming and singing. It takes place in Kangagani, 1h30 from Chake Chake.
