On February 25, 1980, a military coup, known as the "Sergeants' Revolution", led by Sergeant Major Desiré Delano Bouterse, also known as Desi Bouterse, overthrew the existing system, which was too closely tied to Dutch interests. Today, it's known as Liberation and Innovation Day, a curious name for the anniversary of a military coup! And despite Desi Bouterse's conviction in 2019, the date is still on the list of public holidays.
