The snow-covered mountains and the offbeat atmosphere that bathed the film Life is a miracle are not a fiction : they are the typical landscapes of Western Serbia. These wooden houses with their characteristic roofs, these green valleys and hills, and the blue sky that Kusturica so beautifully recreates, are those of the Mokra Gora region, between the Drina and the Zlatar. Western Serbia, a region bordering Bosnia and Montenegro, shares with the latter the mighty Drina and Tara rivers, which form gorges in ancient massifs. The mountains of Western Serbia abound in magnificent vistas, including the Uvac Canyon and the Kablar Gorge. There are tourist centres with a variety of activities, such as the exemplary Zlatibor, as well as some very beautiful villages and, for some years now, gîtes and B&Bs in full expansion. Little inhabited, its mountains are still to be discovered, in all seasons, to feel the thrill of adventure.
