LA TABLE DE TRAJAN

Monuments to visit

28 km downstream of Donji Milanovac is on the Danube, one of the peculiarities inherited from the Roman era, the Trajan table. On the wall of a rock is carved a large frame supported by two figures in bas-relief representing geniuses. The wings of the geniuses surround a Roman eagle, placed in the middle and worn by a dolphin. Registration commemorates the first campaign of Trajan against the Menebria in 103 of our era. Despite its impressive dimension - 3,60 m on 1,75 m - the stone was no longer visible due to the elevation of the Danube level. In the 1970 s, it took it to climb it up to 17 m above the level of the river, placing it on another rocky promontory. Next to this, sections, which are also carved in stone, can be seen in a Roman way that spans miles. Its construction, begun under Tiberius in the year 28, was completed only under Emperor Trajan's reign in 102. This route was of strategic importance, because not only did it offer the Romans a passage over the territory of the Daces, but it was also a natural defence in the north of the Roman Empire. This path ended at the present village of Kostol, where the architect of the emperor, Apolodor from Damascus, built a bridge that spanned the Danube to enter the territory of the Daces. The bridge was 1 000 m long and was built on 20 large columns. Looking to the river, the table is visible only from it. You will therefore need to hire the services of a boat guide to see it (see section concerned).
