The Mosque of Murat I is the oldest Islamic building in Bursa (1363). It is said to have been built by a Christian architect, which may explain some of the peculiarities of its style. Indeed, the mosque has several unusual architectural aspects, including an inverted T-shaped plan and barrel vaults for the wings. At the back of the building, the sultan's lodge can be seen (the only visible part). Opposite is the türbe of Murat I, the third sultan, who died in 1389 in Serbia during the battle of Kosovo.
