PRAIA DE IPANEMA E LEBLON
One and the same beach, separated in the middle by the Jardim de Alá canal, linking Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas to the ocean
They are actually one and the same beach, separated in the middle by the Jardim de Alá canal, which connects the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas to the ocean. Ipanema is now the city's most fashionable beach, even though it differs little from Copacabana, except perhaps for the waves, which are a little stronger (Ipanema means bad water in the Guarani language). The beach of Ipanema was immortalized by the cult song Garota de Ipanema, by Tom Jobim. The statue of the singer is enthroned there, with his guitar on his back!
Leblon is calmer, although the water is a little less clean than in Arpoador or Ipanema. You can order your folding chair(cadeira) and your umbrella(cobra-sol) from one of the many barracas planted on the beach, or the famous globos(they are chips).
Each "community" is identified with its own small beach perimeter, defined according to the surveillance posts. Station 7 (Arpoador) has its surfers, station 8 is the favorite of the gays, station 9 that of the young bobos, each responding to certain codes of conduct, certain fashions. All along the beach, volleyball courts, but especially the great fashion of foot-volleyball, are occupied at dusk when it is cooler by young sportsmen with muscular bodies.
The Mirante do Leblon lookout, at the end of Leblon beach and at the beginning of Avenida Niemeyer, goes around the morro des Deux Frères: it is a perfect place to sip an agua de coco while enjoying the view.
Enfin, pour vivre Laplace comme un carioca, louer une chaise et un parasol (très bon marché) : c'est bien plus confortable.
