NOTRE-DAME-DE-LA-NATIVITÉ CATHEDRAL
Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité with a chapel in Vence, with many remains classified as historical monuments
Built in the fourth century on the location of a pagan temple to the glory of Mars, the cathedral was a Merovingian church redesigned from the ninth century to take its definitive Romanesque form only in the xie. It can be said that it is the synthesis of several styles entangled over the centuries: novel, gothic and baroque. Once the seat of the former diocese of Vence, the cathedral now houses many remains classified at Historic Monuments: notably the baptistry decorated by a mosaic of Marc Chagall, Moses saved from the waters, dating back to 1979, and the stalkeys of the master cabinetmaker Jacques Bellot executed from 1455 to 1460, superb example of the wood sculpture of the fifteenth century in Provence. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Véran, bishop of Vence. It is the smallest cathedral in France. It is also classified to Historical Monuments.
