What are the origins of the Fêtes de Bayonne?

Situated at the confluence of the Adour and Nive rivers, Bayonne becomes the scene of unforgettable festivities. The origins of the Fêtes de Bayonne date back to 1932, inspired by the famous festivals of Pamplona. Indeed, they were introduced by Aviron Bayonnais players wishing to recreate the festive atmosphere they had experienced in Spain. The festivities have since grown to become the largest popular gathering in France. As a result, they symbolize the union and celebration of Basque culture. Called Fêtes, not férias, the Bayonne Festivals are truly unique. They celebrate Basque and Gascon traditions with games, dance and music.

Did you know that the Fêtes de Bayonne are guided not by a saint, but by King Léon! This mascot, created in 1987, has become the festive symbol revered and respected by all festival-goers. In 1988, following the success of King Léon, the members of Or Konpon enriched the Fêtes de Bayonne with a royal retinue of Giants. As a result, the favorite, the doctor, the governess, the chocolatier, the marshal and the fool symbolize Bayonne's traditions and festive spirit.

How do I get to the Fêtes de Bayonne 2024?

Bayonne is easily accessible by train, car or plane. Bayonne station is served by many TGV and regional trains, and the nearest airport is Biarritz, just 15 minutes away.

What's on the program?

The festivities open with the handover of the keys to the city, and continue with concerts, bullfights, Basque dance workshops, exhibitions and parades. Afterwards, the streets come alive with traditional and modern music. On the program:

Who throws the keys at the Fêtes de Bayonne 2024?

Where to park?

The city center will be closed to vehicles from 11am to 7am each day. However, some parking lots are offering parking packages for the duration of the festivities. Alternatively, 1,400 spaces are available on the outskirts. Buses are highly recommended to avoid the stress of parking. We advise you to park your vehicle in the peripheral parking lots and take advantage of the free shuttle buses!
